Rich LiebsonRich Liebson grew up on military bases in the U.S. and Germany as the son of an Air Force master sergeant. After serving four years in the U.S. Army he was hired as a part-time reporter in 1983 and promoted to full-time in 1985. He's had a number of beats over the years including education, municipal government and public safety. He's also been a columnist and city editor for central Westchester. Rich lives in White Plains.

Westchester Vietnam vets meeting next week

Westchester’s Chapter 49 of Vietnam Veterans of America is meeting Thursday (March 6) in White Plains.

Longtime veterans activist Dan Griffin, the chapter’s executive director, says the group is starting a food drive to help stock the food pantry at the Montrose VA hospital.

Iraqis get “condolence payments,” while Vietnamese get the brush off

The Washington Times reports that Iraqis whose relatives were accidentally killed or whose property was destroyed by coalition forces have received more than $40 million in “condolence payments’’ since 2005. The report, which can be viewed here, says the payments are meant to mitigate anger toward the U.S. military.

An Ossining resident recently assumed command of the New York Naval Militia in ceremonies in New York City.

Major General Robert Wolf, a 20-year Marine Corps veteran, became the first Marine in the history of Naval Militia to lead that component of the state’s military forces.

Troops eyeing vote

Interest in the presidential race is high among troops overseas, according to The Stars and Stripes.  A story published yesterday reports that record numbers of soldiers, their families and other Americans who live overseas are accessing the Federal Voting Assistance Program website to obtain information on using absentee ballots.

KatieRich Liebson is a "military brat" who grew up on bases in the U.S. and Germany during his father's 23-year career as an Air Force enlisted man. Rich enlisted in the Army in 1976 and until his discharge in 1980 was assigned to the 78th Engineer Battalion in Ettlingen, Germany, as a public information specialist and translator. He's been a reporter at The Journal News and its forerunner, the Reporter Dispatch, for more than 20 years. During that time he's covered a variety of beats and has written frequently about veterans and veterans issues.
HemaHema Easley was born and raised in India, where she worked as a reporter for The Associated Press and United Press International. While in India she wrote about the insurgency in Indian-controlled Kashmir and covered the 1999 India-Pakistan conflict in the mountains of Kashmir. She joined The Journal News in 2002. She has covered municipal government in Westchester and now covers on social services in Rockland as well as military issues.
