NYC tech institute wants to help train more veterans

On my recent trip to Vietnam, several veterans bitterly recalled facing discrimination and trouble finding work when they had returned from their combat tours in the 1960s and early 1970s. They’re determined that soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq get more help than they did, and some schools and employers seem to have gotten the message.

tci.gifTechnical Career Institutes, a technical college in midtown Manhattan, recently announced it will increase the number of courses in its “Dare 2 Dream; Dare to Repair” program, which offers free computer repair classes for veterans and low-income, minority students.

“The New York metropolitan area has numerous returning veterans in need of skills training that will prepare them for lucrative careers,” said James Melville, school president. “We at TCI are redoubling our efforts to help these brave men and women develop bright futures.”

The news got a thumbs-up from Jim McDonough, director of New York’s Division of Veterans’ Affairs.

“Veterans are facing challenging circumstances when it comes to leaving the service and reintegrating back into civilian life,” he said. “Certain skills may not translate directly into well paid careers. There is a great need for education, training and retraining on the subject. With the potential for challenging economic times confronting us, any help for
veterans is both timely and well appreciated.”

    This is why the current series by the NY Times is so incredibly harmful. The sterotype of the psycho, time bomb vet which was so prevalent (and so untrue) after the Vietnam War has returned in the mainsream media, to include movies and dramas. Hate the war, hate the president, but don’t allow political biases to hurt the warriors. Sadly, it appears that history will repeat itself.

    I agree with you Mr. Cypher. History will repeat itself over and over again because of the insensitivity (for a lack of better words on my part at this time) that is shown to no only our soldiers of the past but also current. Even within the Government facilities it is prevalent. We as a nation need to start recognizing that we are doing more harm than good to our Servicemembers when they come home and are given the cold shoulder. Most of us (yes, I am a veteran) just want to come home and try to start our lives over again. There is no such thing as picking up where we left off. Time stops for no one, and neither does life.
